Xuixo

Breads, Flatbreads and Savory Pastries

Xuixo is a traditional pastry of Girona, Catalonia, a deep-fried, sugar-coated cylindrical viennoiserie filled with crema catalana custard, typically eaten at breakfast or teatime. It is believed to have originated in 1920s Girona at a shop run by Emili Puig on Cort Reial street, who developed his own version after observing cream-filled pastry techniques used in a French patisserie. Though most associated with Girona, it has spread to nearby areas including Tarragona, Castellon and Valencia, and has been officially recognized as a Producte de la Terra by the Catalan department of agriculture.
