Lamprey pie

Lamprey pie is a pastry dish made from sea lampreys or European river lampreys. Lampreys were a delicacy for the wealthy in medieval England and were often given as gifts to royalty to seek favor, and it became a tradition for the city of Gloucester to present the reigning monarch with a lamprey pie every Christmas; in 1200 the city was fined 40 marks for failing to provide one. The annual custom ended in 1836 but was revived in 1893 when the mayor of Gloucester sent a pie to Queen Victoria for her Jubilee Year, and pies continued to be made and sent each year until King George V asked in 1917 that the gift be suspended for the duration of the First World War; the annual custom was never revived, though a lamprey pie is still presented on special occasions such as coronations and jubilees.
