Placenta Cake

Breads, Flatbreads and Savory Pastries

Placenta cake is a dish from ancient Greece and Rome made of many dough layers interspersed with a mixture of cheese and honey, flavored with bay leaves, baked, and then covered in honey. It appears in classical Greek poetry and in Roman agricultural writing, including the works of Archestratos and Antiphanes and the agricultural writing of Cato the Elder, and is considered a forerunner of later layered pastries such as baklava.
