Ranch dressing is a savory, creamy American salad dressing and dip made from a base of mayonnaise or oil emulsified with buttermilk and seasoned with salt, black pepper, garlic, onion and fresh herbs such as chives, parsley and dill, with sour cream or yogurt sometimes substituting for part of the base. It was created in the early 1950s by Steve Henson, a plumbing contractor working in Alaska, who later commercialized it through his Hidden Valley Ranch in California, and it has been the best-selling salad dressing in the United States since 1992, used as a dip and as a topping for chips, pizza and chicken wings as much as on salad.
