Chakalaka is a South African vegetable relish, usually spicy, traditionally served with bread, pap, samp, stews, or curries. It is said to have originated in the townships of Johannesburg or in the surrounding gold mines, when Mozambican mineworkers cooked tinned produce with chili to make a spicy Portuguese-style relish to accompany pap. Many variations exist by region and family tradition, with some versions including beans, cabbage, and butternut squash, and canned baked beans, canned tomatoes, onion, garlic, and curry paste are also commonly used.
