Thousand Island Dressing

Condiments, Sauces and Fermented Flavorings

Thousand Island dressing is a creamy North American condiment made by combining mayonnaise with ketchup or tomato puree and chopped pickles, often with onion, bell pepper, hard-boiled egg or Worcestershire sauce. Its origin is disputed: several stories tie it to the Thousand Islands region of the Saint Lawrence River, including one crediting fishing guide's wife Sophia LaLonde and another crediting a chef at the Waldorf-Astoria around 1894, and the earliest known print reference dates to October 1912. It is used as a salad dressing and as the base of well known secret sauces on fast-food burgers, including McDonald's Big Mac sauce.
