Grapeseed Oil

Fats and Oils

Grapeseed oil, also called grape seed oil or grape oil, is a vegetable oil pressed from grape seeds, a byproduct of winemaking, and is used as a cooking oil with a light taste, a moderately high smoke point of about 216 degrees Celsius and a high polyunsaturated fat content, making it suitable for salad dressings, mayonnaise, herb-infused oils, baked goods and pancakes, as well as a coating that helps preserve raisins. Since winemaking accounts for about 90 percent of grape cultivation, most production is concentrated in wine-growing regions, particularly around the Mediterranean; the oil is roughly 69.6 percent linoleic acid and 15.8 percent oleic acid and provides about 880 kilocalories per 100 grams. Beyond the kitchen it is also used as a massage oil and in cosmetics and hair care products.
