Horse gram, Macrotyloma uniflorum, is a legume of the family Fabaceae native to tropical southern Asia, known by regional names including kulthi bean, gahat, hurali and Madras gram, valued for its distinct taste and texture, its nutrient content and its reputed medicinal properties. Archaeological evidence places the crop in ancient India from as early as 2500 BC, and it is grown today across India, Nepal, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the West Indies. It is eaten whole, sprouted or ground, is permitted on some Hindu fasting days, and its medicinal uses are described in Ayurveda, giving it a role as both a dietary staple and a therapeutic ingredient in South Asia.
