An apricot is a fruit, or the tree that bears it, of several species in the genus Prunus, usually the species Prunus armeniaca, though fruit of other closely related species is also called apricot. In 2023, world production of apricots reached 3.7 million tonnes, led by Turkey with 20 percent of the total. Prunus armeniaca was domesticated in ancient times in Central Asia and China, and its cultivation later spread across Eurasia and into North Africa and Japan; the fruit is eaten fresh and dried, and is used in cakes, tarts and jam as well as savory dishes such as stuffing.
