Finger millet, Eleusine coracana, is an annual herbaceous cereal, a tetraploid, self-pollinating species believed to have evolved from its wild relative Eleusine africana, native to the Ethiopian and Ugandan highlands of East Africa. It withstands cultivation at altitudes over 2,000 meters and shows high drought tolerance, and its grain can be stored for decades, qualities that have made it a widely grown cereal crop across arid and semiarid parts of Africa and Asia, including eastern and southern Africa, India and Nepal.
