Sriracha

Condiments, Sauces and Fermented Flavorings

Sriracha is a hot or chili sauce made from a paste of chili peppers, distilled vinegar, pickled garlic, sugar and salt, first produced in 1932 by La-Orr Suwanprasop, a Bangkok resident originally from the town of Si Racha, Thailand, whose sauce won a gold medal at a Constitution Celebration competition that year; it may derive from an older Cantonese garlic-and-chili sauce from Shunde, China, brought to Si Racha by Cantonese immigrants in the early 1900s. The first internationally recognized brand, Sriraja Panich, began selling in 1935 under creator Thanom Chakkapak, also from Si Racha, and the Thai Theparos Company acquired the brand in 1984 and expanded its distribution worldwide.
