Frutta martorana

Breads, Flatbreads and Savory Pastries

Frutta martorana is a Sicilian marzipan sweet shaped and colored to resemble fruits and vegetables, associated with the provinces of Palermo and Trapani. It is said to have originated at the Benedictine nunnery of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio in Palermo, known as La Martorana, when nuns decorated bare fruit trees with marzipan fruit to impress a visiting archbishop out of season. It is traditionally left by children's bedsides on All Souls' Day.
