Kolach is a traditional bread found in Central and Eastern European cuisines, made from wheat or rye flour and, in some regional versions, enriched with milk and eggs. It is served during special occasions such as wedding celebrations, Christmas, Easter, and the Dozynki harvest festival, and remains especially important in Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Serbia, and Russia. Its name comes from the Old Slavonic word kolo, meaning circle or wheel, describing the bread's round shape. Kolach was created by the early Slavs, and documented records of it appearing at Polish weddings date back to the early 13th century.
