Cup noodle

Cup noodle is an instant ramen product packaged in a disposable cup, prepared simply by adding boiling water to cook the precooked noodles inside. It was created in Japan in 1971 by Momofuku Ando, the founder of Nissin Foods, who judged that the bowl style packaging already used for Asian markets would not appeal to American consumers and developed the cup format instead; early versions added dried vegetables to make a complete instant soup. The product reached the United States in 1972 as Cup O' Noodles before being rebranded Cup Noodles in 1993. Cup Noodle and Cup Noodles remain registered trademarks of Nissin Foods, though the term cup noodle is also used generically for the broader category of instant noodles sold in individual cups by many manufacturers worldwide, and it is in that generic sense that the dish is described here.
