Klepon, also known as onde onde or buah Melaka, is a traditional Southeast Asian confection made from glutinous rice flour balls filled with palm sugar and coated in grated coconut. The dough, typically colored green with pandan or suji leaf extract, is boiled until the palm sugar filling melts, producing a burst of sweetness when eaten, and the confection is widely sold in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore. It carries ceremonial significance in several communities of the region, appearing in Bugis Makassar and Balinese ritual offerings, Malay and Banjar Ramadan traditions, and Minangkabau and Peranakan Chinese matrimonial customs, while a similar Thai preparation is called khanom tom.
