Garnishing is the technique of decorating or embellishing a prepared food dish or drink with a garnish, an item or substance added for that purpose. Some garnishes serve mainly to improve appearance, while others add extra or contrasting flavors, which distinguishes garnishing from the use of a condiment, a prepared sauce added to a food item primarily for its flavor. A dish served with a garnish may be described as garni, French for garnished.
