An octopus is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusc of the order Octopoda, one of roughly 300 species in the class Cephalopoda alongside squid, cuttlefish and nautiluses, with bilateral symmetry, two eyes and a beaked mouth at the center of its arms; octopuses can radically reshape their soft bodies to squeeze through tight spaces and use a siphon for both breathing and jet-propelled movement. They have an unusually complex nervous system of more than 500 million neurons, about as many as a dog, with two thirds of them located in the arms' own nerve cords, giving the arms a degree of independent control, and they show exceptional eyesight, elaborate camouflage through specialized skin cells called chromatophores, and problem-solving and tool-using behavior that make them among the most intelligent invertebrates known. Octopuses are eaten and considered a delicacy in many parts of the world, especially around the Mediterranean and in Asia.
