Nutmeg is the seed, or the ground spice derived from the seed, of several tree species in the genus Myristica; the fragrant or true nutmeg tree is a dark-leaved evergreen cultivated for two distinct spices from its fruit, nutmeg from the seed and mace from the seed's covering, as well as for nutmeg essential oil and nutmeg butter. The Banda Islands in Maluku, Indonesia, the tree's native home, remain the main producer of nutmeg and mace, and both spices have traditionally been used for supposed psychoactive and aphrodisiac effects, though clinical evidence for these is lacking and high doses can cause serious toxic effects, including acute psychosis, with heightened risk during pregnancy and for people with psychiatric conditions.
