Vatapa is an Afro Brazilian dish descended from West African cooking brought to Brazil by the Yoruba people, its name deriving from a Yoruba phrase. It is made from bread, shrimp, coconut milk and finely ground peanuts mashed together with palm oil into a creamy paste, and is especially associated with Salvador, Bahia and Brazil's North and Northeast regions. In Bahia it is traditionally paired with acaraje and offered in Candomble ceremonies, while elsewhere in Brazil it is more commonly eaten with white rice.
