Apfelkuchle is a traditional German pastry of sliced apples dipped in a batter of eggs, flour, sugar, salt and milk and fried until golden brown, similar to an apple fritter but cooked more like a pancake; some recipes add beer, fruit brandy or cinnamon to the batter. It originates in Baden-Wurttemberg in southern Germany, where it has long been eaten as part of a meal, though it has since spread through Europe and North America and today is more often served as a dessert, warm with cinnamon and sugar, powdered sugar, vanilla sauce or vanilla ice cream.
