American Goulash

American goulash is a casserole of pasta, usually macaroni or egg noodles, cooked with ground beef, onions, garlic and tomatoes, sometimes with cheese added, and is considered comfort food chiefly in the American Midwest and South, where it is also called slumgullion or Minnesota goulash. It descends from Hungarian goulash; references to it appear in American cookbooks as far back as 1914, and the recipe has since developed into many regional versions.
