Stew Peas

Stews, Braises and Sauced Dishes

Stew peas is a Jamaican main dish of kidney beans stewed with cured meats, coconut milk, herbs and spices into a thick, protein-rich stew. It reflects the Caribbean Creole blend of Spanish, Taino, African, Chinese and East Indian influences on Jamaican cooking, and has been a staple of Jamaican homes and restaurants since at least the 1940s. It is usually served over white rice, and similar bean stews appear elsewhere in the Americas, such as Brazilian feijoada and Cuban frijoles negros.
