Peanut stew, also known as groundnut stew or, in French, pate d'arachide, is a staple stew of West Africa. Maafe is the variety of the dish that originated in Senegal, while a related stew called tigadeguena developed separately among the Mandinka and Bambara peoples of Mali and is traditionally served with Malian fufu, known there as tuwo; the two are often mistakenly conflated, even though maafe is a colonial era dish built on ingredients, including rice, that were unknown in Mali before being imported from Senegal, and the peanut itself was unfamiliar there, where the native Bambara groundnut was used instead.
