Cane Syrup

Sweeteners

Ribbon cane syrup is a traditional sweetener made from ribbon cane, a subtropical type of sugarcane once widely grown in the Southern United States as far north as coastal North Carolina. Its juice was extracted with horse or mule powered crushers, then boiled in a flat pan much like maple syrup, and used in syrup form as a food sweetener. The crop is no longer commercially significant, though a few growers still find ready sales for their product.
