Mannitol

Sweeteners

Mannitol is a sugar alcohol used as a low calorie sweetener because it is poorly absorbed by the intestines. Beyond its food use it is also used as a medication, given by injection or inhalation to decrease pressure in the eyes, as in glaucoma, and to lower increased pressure inside the skull, with effects that typically begin within fifteen minutes and last up to eight hours.
