Thoran, also known as upperi in northern Kerala, is a class of dry vegetable dishes combined with grated coconut that originated in the Indian state of Kerala. It is commonly eaten with rice and curry and forms part of the traditional Keralite feast known as sadhya; a similar dish in Tamil Nadu is called poriyal. Thoran is made from a wide range of vegetables, including cabbage, tender jackfruit, carrot, beetroot, beans, spinach, green beans, ivy gourd, elephant foot yam and raw banana, and is usually named after whichever vegetable is used, as in cabbage thoran or tender jackfruit thoran.
