Dishwasher salmon is a cooking technique in which salmon, seasoned and wrapped in at least two layers of aluminum foil, is placed inside a dishwasher and cooked through a full wash cycle, sometimes including the heated dry setting. The method broils, steams, and bakes the fish at once and leaves the kitchen free of cooking odor. It became widely known when the actor Vincent Price demonstrated preparing trout this way on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1975, describing it as a dish any fool can prepare, and it resurfaced on the Canadian program The Surreal Gourmet in 2002. Dishwasher manufacturers and consumer safety groups have since warned that inconsistent water temperatures make it hard to be sure the fish reaches a safe internal temperature.
