Club Sandwich

A club sandwich is a three-layer sandwich of three slices of bread, traditionally toasted, filled with sliced poultry, fried bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, and usually cut diagonally into quarters or halves held together with cocktail sticks. It most likely originated at the Union Club of New York City, and its earliest documented mention appeared in The Evening World on November 18, 1889, which described it as two toasted slices of Graham bread with a layer of turkey or chicken and ham between them. Chicken was the traditional meat, though turkey has become increasingly common in modern versions, and the sandwich had already reached restaurant menus across the United States by 1899, since which time it has remained a widespread menu staple with many variations in meats, cheeses and condiments.
