Kaya Toast

Breads, Flatbreads and Savory Pastries

Kaya toast is a dish of two slices of toast with butter and kaya, a coconut jam, commonly served with kopi and soft-boiled eggs. It is believed to have been created by Hainanese immigrants to the Straits Settlements in the nineteenth century while serving on British ships at the Port of Singapore, and it became integrated into coffeeshop culture, now widely available at kopitiams, hawker centres, food courts, and Singaporean cafe chains such as Ya Kun Kaya Toast, Killiney Kopitiam, and Toast Box.

FAQs

How did kaya toast become part of Singapore breakfast?

According to SG101, a Singapore government heritage site, it started with the arrival of Hainanese immigrants in the 19th century, many of whom ended up working in European households and hotels. Many Hainanese later set up their own eateries, serving Asian versions of western foods, including breakfast toast where fruit jams were replaced with coconut spread. Between the 1920s and 50s, the Hainanese carved out a niche in the Kopitiam scene and popularised this style of breakfast.
