A Dagwood sandwich is a tall, multilayered sandwich built from a wide variety of meats, cheeses and condiments stacked between slices of bread. It takes its name from Dagwood Bumstead, a character in the comic strip Blondie who is regularly drawn assembling enormous sandwiches of this kind. According to the strip's later writer Dean Young, his father Chic Young began drawing these oversized sandwiches in the comic in 1936.
