Osechi-ryori are the traditional foods eaten in Japan to celebrate the New Year. They are recognizable by the special tiered boxes called jubako in which they are packed, which resemble bento boxes and, like bento boxes, are typically kept stacked before and after use. Not every region of Japan keeps the custom of eating osechi; the town of Suzu in Ishikawa is noted as one place where the practice is not followed.
