Hawaiian Pizza

Hawaiian pizza is a pizza variety topped with pineapple, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and ham or bacon. It was invented in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek-born Canadian restaurateur, at the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham-Kent, Ontario, drawing on the sweet and sour combinations common in Canadian Chinese cooking. Panopoulos named the topping after the canned Hawaiian Pineapple Company brand he used rather than any connection to Hawaii itself. Though not popular at first, the combination went on to be adopted by pizzerias worldwide.
