Greek salad, known in Greek as horiatiki or choriatiki, meaning village salad, is a staple of Greek and Cypriot cuisine made from tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, feta cheese and olives, typically Kalamata, dressed simply with salt, oregano, lemon juice and olive oil. In the Cyclades islands, green bell peppers or caper berries are sometimes added. The dish is often thought of as reflecting a farmer's everyday breakfast or lunch, built from ingredients readily available on a Greek smallholding, and a defining feature of the authentic version is that it contains no lettuce, which distinguishes it from many international imitations. Versions served outside Greece, especially in the United States, commonly add lettuce and depart further from the traditional recipe, while versions served elsewhere in Europe tend to stay closer to the original.
