Charoset

Salads, Dips, Sandwiches and Fermented Cold Dishes

Charoset is a sweet, dark colored mixture of finely chopped fruits and nuts eaten at the Jewish Passover Seder, typically made from ingredients such as apples, pears, raisins, figs, orange juice, red wine, pine nuts and cinnamon, with regional variations adding dates, walnuts, sesame, wine vinegar, black pepper or marjoram. Its color and texture are meant to recall the mortar, or mud used for adobe bricks, that the Israelites used during their enslavement in ancient Egypt, and its name comes from the Hebrew word for clay; it is eaten as one of the symbolic foods on the Seder plate, traditionally after maror is dipped in charoset and again combined with matzah in a Hillel sandwich.
