Quail is a collective name for several genera of mid sized birds in the order Galliformes, divided into Old World quail in the family Phasianidae and New World quail in the family Odontophoridae, with buttonquail of the family Turnicidae only superficially resembling them despite the shared name. A group of quail on the ground is called a flock, covey or bevy, and many of the larger species are farm raised for table food or eggs and hunted on game farms or in the wild; in 2007, 40 million quail were produced in the United States alone.
