McMuffin is the name McDonald's gives to its family of breakfast sandwiches built on a toasted, buttered English muffin. Its signature member, the Egg McMuffin, was invented in 1972 by Herb Peterson, who ran a McDonald's franchise in Goleta, California, with the help of assistant Donald Greadel, deliberately designed to resemble eggs Benedict, a traditional American breakfast of English muffin, Canadian bacon, egg and hollandaise sauce. The standard Egg McMuffin layers a slice of Canadian bacon, a griddle fried egg cooked in a ring mold to keep its round shape, and a slice of American cheese; later additions to the family include the Sausage McMuffin, Chicken McMuffin, Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and the related McGriddles, which places a scrambled egg and cheese between two maple flavored griddle pancakes instead of a muffin.
