FAQs

Where does the name cassata come from?

The name is thought to come from the Arabic qas’at, a wide circular pan.

Strazzanti Experiences, a Sicilian food and cooking company, says it is believed that the cassata was created during the Arabic domination of Sicily and that the name derives from the Arabic word qas’at. This is thought to be the name of a wide circular pan with sloping sides, which is the traditional type of dish used to make the cassata.
