Latte, short for the Italian caffe latte meaning milk coffee, is a coffee drink made from espresso combined with a larger proportion of steamed milk than a cappuccino, topped with a thin layer of milk foam. It developed from the same Italian espresso bar tradition as the cappuccino and the espresso itself, and its milder, milkier balance made it especially popular as espresso based coffee culture spread to the United States and other countries from the later twentieth century onward. Lattes are commonly served with decorative latte art poured or etched into the foam and are frequently flavored with syrups, making them one of the most customizable and widely ordered espresso drinks.
