Snakeheads are freshwater predatory fish in the family Channidae, with long dorsal fins, large mouths and sharp teeth, notable for breathing air and surviving on land for up to four days when wet. Native to parts of Africa and Asia, they have also become established in non-native waters including the Potomac River, Florida and other parts of the United States. They are valuable food fish across Burma, Manipur, Kerala, where they are prepared as varal curry, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, and larger species are farmed commercially; in the United States some chefs have suggested controlling the invasive population by serving them in restaurants.
