Strawberry

The garden strawberry, commonly called simply the strawberry, is a widely grown hybrid plant cultivated worldwide for its fruit, part of the genus Fragaria in the rose family. The fruit is valued for its aroma, bright red color, juicy texture and sweetness, and is eaten fresh or in prepared foods such as jam, ice cream and chocolates; botanically it is not a true berry but an aggregate accessory fruit, and each apparent seed on its outer surface is actually a separate small fruit called an achene containing a seed inside. The garden strawberry was first bred in Brittany, France, in the 1750s, by crossing a species native to eastern North America with one brought from Chile in 1714 by the French explorer Amedee-Francois Frezier.
