A cherry is the fruit of many plants in the genus Prunus, a fleshy stone fruit known botanically as a drupe. Commercial cherries come from cultivars of several species, chiefly the sweet cherry Prunus avium and the sour cherry Prunus cerasus, and the same name is applied to the tree, its flowers and its wood, as in ornamental cherry or cherry blossom; in the British Isles, wild cherry usually refers specifically to Prunus avium growing outside cultivation.
