Banana

A banana is an elongated, edible fruit, botanically a berry, produced by several large treelike herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa; in some countries the starchier cooking varieties are called plantains to distinguish them from sweeter dessert bananas. The fruit grows upward in clusters near the top of the plant and varies in size, color and firmness, but is usually elongated and curved, with soft starchy flesh covered by a peel. Almost all modern edible seedless cultivated bananas descend from two wild species, Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana, or their hybrids, native to tropical Indomalaya and Australia and probably first domesticated in New Guinea. Bananas are now grown in 135 countries, primarily for their fruit and to a lesser extent for banana paper and textiles.
