Cyclamate is an artificial sweetener between thirty and fifty times sweeter than table sugar, making it the mildest of the major commercial artificial sweeteners. It is frequently blended with saccharin, commonly at a ratio of about ten parts cyclamate to one part saccharin, a combination that reduces the aftertaste each sweetener produces on its own. Cyclamate is valued for being inexpensive relative to alternatives such as sucralose and for remaining stable when heated during food processing, though safety concerns have led to bans in some countries even as regulators in the European Union continue to permit its use.
