Glucose is a simple sugar with the molecular formula C6H12O6, the most abundant monosaccharide in nature and the primary energy source used by living cells. As a food ingredient, glucose occurs naturally as one of the two sugars that make up honey, and is also produced commercially as dextrose from starches such as corn for use in beverage mixes, confectionery and other manufactured foods. Because it is a single simple sugar rather than the more familiar table sugar, sucrose, glucose is absorbed directly into the bloodstream without needing to be broken down first.
