Kodo millet, Paspalum scrobiculatum, is a small-grained cereal that has been cultivated in India for thousands of years and is also grown in parts of West Africa and Southeast Asia. It is an exceptionally hardy crop, tolerant of drought and poor soils, and matures quickly compared to major cereals. The grain is high in dietary fiber and naturally gluten-free, traditionally cooked whole like rice or ground into flour, and remains an important food security crop in dry, marginal farming regions of South India.
