Muhammara is a spicy dip and spread originating in Aleppo, Syria, made from roasted red bell peppers or a red pepper paste, ground walnuts, breadcrumbs, olive oil and pomegranate molasses, which gives it a characteristic tart-sweet note. It is a staple of Levantine and Turkish (where a related version is called muhammara or acuka) meze spreads, typically served with flatbread. The dish has spread widely across the Middle East and into Middle Eastern restaurants internationally.
