Neotame

Sweeteners

Neotame is a non-caloric artificial sweetener and an analog of aspartame, sold under the brand name Newtame and synthesized by chemically modifying aspartame itself. It is 7,000 to 13,000 times sweeter than sucrose by mass, with no notable off-flavors compared to sugar, and can enhance food flavors, combine synergistically with other sweeteners to boost their sweetness, and mask unwanted tastes such as saccharin's bitterness or caffeine's. Chemically more stable than aspartame, it suits carbonated soft drinks, yogurts, cakes, drink powders and bubble gum as well as tabletop use, and it was approved by the FDA in 2002 as a non-nutritive sweetener and flavor enhancer for foods other than meat and poultry, and by the European Union in 2010 under the number E961.
