Sucralose

Sweeteners

Sucralose is an artificial sweetener and sugar substitute, designated E955 in the European Union, produced by chlorinating sucrose to selectively replace three of its hydroxyl groups, giving it the chemical formula C12H19Cl3O8. It is about 600 times sweeter than table sugar, three times as sweet as both aspartame and acesulfame potassium, and twice as sweet as sodium saccharin, while supplying only about 3.3 kilocalories per gram as a non-nutritive sweetener. It does not promote dental cavities and is regarded as safe for people with diabetes, and its favorable taste, stability and safety compared with other low-calorie sweeteners have driven its commercial use.
