Pundi

Noodle and Dumpling Dishes

Pundi, also called pundi gatti, is a soft, round rice dumpling that belongs to Mangalorean cuisine and is native to the Tulu Nadu region of India. The rice is soaked, ground, tempered with seasoning, cooked and finally steamed, giving a plain dumpling that is popularly known simply as pundi in Udupi and Mangalore in the state of Karnataka. Like many Mangalorean breakfast dishes it is usually eaten with coconut chutney. A sweet version filled with jaggery and grated coconut, known in Tulu as cheepe pundi, is also made.
