Taralli are toroidal Italian snack foods common in southern Italy, made from a wheat flour dough shortened with olive oil or, traditionally, lard, and shaped into rings or ovals roughly 10 to 12.5 centimeters around, textured somewhat like a breadstick and made in both sweet and savory versions; a smaller commercial form, tarallini, measures about 3.8 to 7.8 centimeters. Historically the snack held a place alongside biscotti as a treat once reserved for Christmas and Easter in some Italian communities, and before the Second World War the taralli culture of the Mergellina district of Naples saw working class residents eating them with almonds alongside beer, wine or mineral water; specialty bakeries in places such as Caserta continue to sell flavored versions including fennel and sun dried tomato.
